INCSJII, condemns the murder of killing the Dutch journalist Peter R de Vries

Baghdad 16 July 2021:The Iraqi National Committee for the safety of Journalists and Issue of Impunity" expresses its deepest condolences to the Dutch Journalists Union, the Presveilig for the Protection of Journalists, and to the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Iraq. INCSJII expressing its deep regret over the death of the prominent Dutch journalist Peter R de Vries, who was seriously shot in the center of Amsterdam before Almost two weeks.

The National Committee condemns and denounces the assassination of this 64-year-old journalist when he was shot in the head minutes after leaving a television studio. Mr. de Vries is best known by his investigations on the crimes of the gangsters ,drug lords and has won critical acclaim for his reporting on the Dutch underworld – including the 1983 kidnapping of beer millionaire Freddy Heineken. In 2013, Mr. Heineken's kidnapper, Willem Holleeder, was convicted of making threats against journalist De Vries. Willem, One of the most notorious gangsters in the Netherlands, Holleeder, was sentenced to life in prison in 2019 for his involvement in five murders. Mr. de Vries had previously been at risk for his work and needed police protection after receiving threats regarding his coverage of criminal cases.

While the Iraqi National Committee condemns these attacks and such crimes in the Netherlands and elsewhere in the world, it affirms that it is moving forward in improving the media and journalistic environment in Iraq, which is among the most dangerous environments in the world for the work of journalists. The committee expresses its solidarity with the Dutch journalistic community, which provided the support to the Journalists in Iraq through programs and projects funded by the Kingdom of the Netherlands, not least of which is the project "Breaking the Silence: Enhancing the Governmental Accountability on the crimes against the journalists in Iraq".
